I made a mistake in my previous post when I mentioned Argentinian beef exports are forbidden. Attempting in depth discussions in Spanish is dangerous for me, as it seems I misunderstand things worse than Ronald Reagan when he tried to use Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" as his political campaign theme song. What I'm trying to say is, I was wrong - beef exports are allowed.

My favourite part of the Wikipedia article is the quote from George Will, the columnist who suggested using Springsteen's music to Reagan's campaign advisors after attending one of his concerts:

"I have not got a clue about Springsteen's politics, if any, but flags get waved at his concerts while he sings songs about hard times. He is no whiner, and the recitation of closed factories and other problems always seems punctuated by a grand, cheerful affirmation: 'Born in the U.S.A.!'

If this is the level of insight you need to become a newspaper columnist, sign me up! Did I mention he went to the concert in a bow tie and double-breasted blazer? This is the column the quote was taken from. It includes other gems such as:

If all Americans -- in labor and management, who make steel or cars or shoes or textiles -- made their products with as much energy and confidence as Springsteen and his merry band make music, there would be no need for Congress to be thinking about protectionism.

A highly entertaining read.

Yes, I was a bit surprised at the observation of Argentinian beef not being exported - when Jill was here a couple of weeks ago she enjoyed a superb Argentinian beef steak at a nearby restaurant in Hammersmith Grove. Thought she might have done something illegal!! I tried it but it didn't compare with the freshly bbqd cow we had on a friend's farm in S. Brazil last Sept. It melted on the tongue .... sooo good even for someone not mad on eating much meat!
Keep up the great descriptive and observational work. Thinking of you lots.
